1. The Chain Brake Is Still On

The chain brake is the first part to check. It is designed to stop chain movement during kickback or when the front hand guard is pushed forward. It can also be activated while carrying the saw, setting it down, or working among branches.

With the engine off and power disconnected, grip the front handle. Pull the hand guard back toward the handle. A firm click usually means the brake has released.

Do not hold the throttle while trying to overpower an activated brake. The clutch will heat quickly. The clutch cover may become very hot, and plastic near the brake band can suffer damage.

Some chainsaw side covers contain the chain-brake band. If the brake was activated while the cover was removed, the cover may not fit back over the clutch drum. Do not hammer or pry it into place. Read the model manual for the brake-reset method or take the cover to a dealer.

2. The Chain Is Too Tight

Disconnect all power and let the chain cool. Wear sturdy gloves. Release the chain brake, then try to pull the chain forward along the top of the bar. It should move with firm hand pressure. The drive links should remain seated inside the bar groove.

When the chain feels locked in place, loosen the bar nuts slightly. Turn the tension screw or adjustment dial a small amount toward the loose setting. Lift the bar nose while making the final adjustment, then tighten the bar nuts.

Check the model manual because tension systems differ. A cold chain and a hot chain can also feel different. Metal expands as it heats. Never tighten a hot chain until it becomes rigid, since it may contract and grip the bar after cooling.

3. Wood Chips or Dirt Have Jammed the Chain

Wet sawdust can pack around the drive sprocket like clay. Bark strips, small twigs, dirt, and sticky tree sap can add to the blockage. A chain may stop at once when a chip becomes trapped between a drive link and the bar groove.

Disconnect the saw from power. Remove the clutch or sprocket cover under the directions in the manual. Brush packed debris from the cover, sprocket area, bar studs, oil outlet, and tension pin.

Remove the bar and chain when the blockage cannot be reached from the outside. Clean the bar groove with a thin bar-groove cleaner or a piece made for that job. Do not use a screwdriver that is too wide, since it can spread or scar the rails.

Look closely at every drive link. Bent links may catch in the groove. Damaged rivets can also make one chain section stiff. Replace a chain that has bent, cracked, or badly worn parts.

4. The Bar Is Pinched in the Wood

A log can close around the bar before a cut is finished. The chain may stop because the rails are squeezed against the wood. This often happens when the operator guesses the compression side of a branch or trunk incorrectly.

Release the throttle at once. Shut down the saw before trying to free it. Do not pull hard on a running chainsaw. The chain may break free without warning and race toward nearby wood, clothing, or legs.

Use a plastic wedge in a suitable place to open the cut. A second saw may be needed when the first bar is trapped, though the second cut must be placed away from the trapped bar. Never strike the guide bar with a metal hammer.

Remove all power and take off the bar and chain. Try to turn the nose sprocket with a suitable blunt object. Keep fingers away from sharp chain cutters. The sprocket should turn without rough spots or grinding.

A nose sprocket that will not turn can lock the whole chain. Some bar tips can be greased under the maker’s directions. Others are designed to run with bar oil alone. Follow the bar maker’s instructions rather than adding grease by guesswork.

Replace a bar with a frozen sprocket, cracked rails, a badly widened groove, deep burns, or severe blue heat marks. A new chain placed on a ruined bar will wear quickly.

6. The Saw Is Not Feeding Enough Bar Oil

Bar oil lowers friction between the chain, bar rails, and nose sprocket. Without enough oil, heat rises quickly. The chain can tighten, bind, and stop.

Check the oil tank first. Fill it with bar-and-chain oil named for the weather and saw. Do not run the saw with an empty oil tank.

Next, clean the oil outlet on the saw body and the matching oil hole in the guide bar. Packed dust can block either opening. Clean the bar groove because oil must travel along that path.

After reassembly, test oil flow under the method in the manual. Many makers direct the operator to aim the bar near a pale stump or sheet of cardboard and briefly raise chain speed. A fine line of oil should appear. Keep the bar away from people and loose objects during this test.

Stop work when the chain stays dry, smokes, or turns blue. An oil pump, oil hose, filter, or drive part may need dealer care.

7. The Drive Sprocket Is Worn or Damaged

The clutch drum or drive sprocket transfers engine power to the chain. Each chain drive link fits against the sprocket teeth. Long use can wear deep grooves into those teeth.

A worn sprocket may slip under load. The chain can move in open air, then stop as soon as it touches wood. You may hear clicking, rattling, or grinding near the clutch cover.

10. A Battery Chainsaw Has Entered Overload Mode

Battery chainsaws often stop the motor when the chain becomes pinched, the motor becomes hot, or current draw rises too far. This protects the battery and motor from damage.

Release the trigger. Remove the battery. Let the saw and battery cool away from direct sun. Clear trapped wood and check chain tension before fitting the battery again.

Check the battery charge lights. Clean dry dust from the battery rails and air openings with a soft brush. Do not pour water into the battery bay.
