The Geometry of Precision Chainsaw Chain Sharpening

Sharpening a chainsaw chain by hand with a round file is a fundamental skill for every sawyer. Using the wrong file diameter destroys the cutter geometry: a file that is too large flattens the top plate cutting angle and creates negative rake, while a file that is too small creates a hook-shaped edge that dulls instantly and causes cutter tooth breakage.

This calculator determines the precise round file size, top plate filing angle, downward tilt angle, and depth gauge (raker) clearance for every chain pitch and cutter profile.

Step-by-Step Filing Technique for Maximum Edge Sharpness

  1. Secure Bar in Vice: Clamp the guide bar securely in a stump vice or bench vice so the chain does not wobble.
  2. Apply Chain Brake: Engage the chain brake to lock the loop while filing individual teeth.
  3. 1/10th File Elevation Above Top Plate: Ensure 20% (1/5th) of the round file diameter extends above the top plate edge. This creates the correct forward hook angle.
  4. Push Stroke Only: File strictly on the forward push stroke using smooth, firm pressure. Lift the file on the return stroke—dragging a file backward dulls file teeth.
  5. Count File Strokes: Apply the exact same number of strokes (typically 3 to 5 pushes) to every tooth to maintain uniform cutter length.

Progressive File Downsizing as Teeth Wear Down

As cutter teeth are filed back over their lifespan, the top plate slopes downward toward the heel. Continuing to use a large file on a worn tooth will cause the file to strike the rivet below.

  • Stihl Progressive Rule: On 3/8" standard chain, start with a 13/64" (5.2mm) file when new. Once the cutter tooth is 50% worn down, switch to a 3/16" (4.8mm) file to maintain proper gullet radius without hitting the drive link rivets.
  • Raker Filing: Every 3rd filing session, check depth gauges using a flat file and depth gauge tool. File rakers flat to .025" for hardwood or .030" for softwoods.
