Deciphering Chainsaw Chain Size Specifications

Selecting a replacement chain loop requires matching three distinct physical dimensions: Pitch, Gauge, and Drive Link Count (DL). If any one of these three dimensions is mismatched, the chain will either fail to mount on the guide bar, bind tightly in the bar groove, or slip off the drive sprocket during cutting.

This calculator decodes all major pitch and gauge combinations, providing exact cross-reference matching for Stihl, Oregon, Husqvarna, and Carlton chain series.

The Three Pillars of Chain Sizing

  1. Chain Pitch:
    • The average distance between any three consecutive rivets divided by two.
    • Common Pitches: 1/4" (0.250"), 3/8" Low Profile (Picco / Micro), .325", 3/8" Standard, and .404".
  2. Bar Rail Gauge:
    • The thickness of the drive link tang where it sits inside the guide bar groove.
    • Common Gauges: .043" (1.1mm), .050" (1.3mm), .058" (1.5mm), and .063" (1.6mm).
  3. Drive Link Count (DL):
    • The exact count of individual drive link teeth along the inner circumference of the closed loop.

Cutter Types: Full Chisel vs Semi Chisel vs Rip Chain

  • Full Chisel (Square Corner): Features sharp 90° square cutter corners. Cuts softwood and clean timber at maximum speed, but dulls rapidly in dirty wood, frozen timber, or bark contaminated with sand.
  • Semi Chisel (Rounded Corner): Features a rounded cutter corner profile. Maintains its sharp edge significantly longer in dirty wood, frozen logs, or dry hardwood.
  • Rip Chain: Ground at a 10° top plate angle specifically for chainsaw milling (cutting parallel to wood grain).
