Excitebike

Excitebike CoverRacing

October 1985 (Nintendo)

Excitebike is a racing game.  Bet you never saw that coming did you?

In all seriousness though, this is a pretty decent game.  The controls are pretty nice.  Up and down move your bike up and down on the screen.  A makes the motor go vroom and B makes the motor go VROOM.  Going vroom is the regular motor that makes the bike go.  VROOM on the other hand kicks in some extra juice.  In order to make sure you can’t abuse that using the extra juice makes your motor heat up and eventually overheat to the point where you have to pull your bike to the side and let it cool off.

Excitebike has a lot of nice things about it.  You have to worry about landing the bike right coming off of a jump.  When you’re racing against the computer you have to worry about running into other racers.  If you run into them there’s a chance you’ll be knocked off your bike and will have to get back on.  You can even create tracks, although in the US version you can’t save them at all and in the Japanese version you needed a special add on.

The only thing that I find lacking is multiplayer option.  Other than that, this game is about as perfect as you could expect from a game at this point.
