Some people like collecting. And to them I say "What's the point in having the game if you're not going to play it?"

Obviously I think those people are just weird.

Anyone who pays through the nose for this game instead of the few bucks to get World Class Track Meet (which is different only by its title screen) is a fool.

Seriously, fuck cats. Where do they get off thinking they can type? And it's nice to see that everyone can agree on one thing: You shouldn't play M.U.S.C.L.E.

It's always nice when a NES game surprises you, especially if you think it's going to suck at first. Sadly, these are almost as rare as an Earthbound Zero prototype cart.

Also, the word "Bungle" makes me laugh.

Hearing that again reminds me of how I used to see SimCity 2000 in Toys R Us and how stupid I thought that was to have as a SNES game. But I never had a SNES until a few months ago so there was never any question of if I'd buy it or not.

I guess I'll have to finally play it if I decide to do SNES after I finish all the NES stuff.

This wouldn't have meant anything to the average kid in 1987, but this is now mostly noteworthy for being Will Wright's first game.

And the box art always reminded me of the poster for Dario Argento's Inferno: http://horror-movies.wikia.com/wiki/Inferno

It's crazy, but I'm going to compare this to food. Calamari actually.

I started off not liking it. But I had to eat it because I would send it out at work and it was always making me want to spit it back out.

But now, I'm actually starting to like it. It's crazy.

Funny you say that. I didn't expect the game to be good, but I didn't expect it to be anywhere near this bad either.

If you're going to go by the developer then what do you do about <a href=http://jugglechainsaws.com/tag/micronics/ rel="nofollow">Micronics</a>? They're notorious for being bad developers. They put out crap like <a class="game" href="http://jugglechainsaws.com/athena/" rel="nofollow">Athena</a> and <a class="game" href="http://jugglechainsaws.com/tiger-heli/" rel="nofollow">Tiger Heli</a>.

They also brought us <a class="game" href="http://jugglechainsaws.com/ghosts-n-goblins/" rel="nofollow">Ghosts 'n Goblins</a> and <a class="game" href="http://jugglechainsaws.com/1942-us/" rel="nofollow">1942</a>. I don't know anyone who is going to say those are terrible games.

I'm not saying that past performances mean nothing. But when you consider that these companies get experience with making this for the system (and in some cases making video games in general) and have the ability higher and fire based on the success of what they've done then you have to take history with a grain of salt.

That being said, I've watched every episode of Chrontendo so far and I can hear the pain in Dr. Sparkle's voice when we get to a Pony Canyon game.

This really is a crappy port of a good Commodore 64 game, though what did you expect from a cart developed by the same crew that did Super Pitfall (another classic they butchered)?

I personally didn't find Clu Clu Land that horrible. I've been used to the game's old and peculiar controls, only pain are those Uniras and some randomly placed hidden obstacles. If there's one person who still enjoys this title, let it be me.

I don't think that US PCs had the reach into Japan in '83-'84 that they do now. Dr. Sparkle's side bits on Chrontendo made it clear that the MSX and PC 88 dominated the Japanese computer market back then.

Ah, so it isn't a forgotten phenomenon then. That's the kind of thing I miss out on by playing old games and paying almost no attention to modern stuff.

I'm glad I have you to keep me straight on stuff like this.

Actually, it did happen recently, with Professor Layton. The sequel was out in Japan by the time we got the first game in the series. And Phoenix Wright didn't come to America until the DS remakes were made.

That's something I just don't understand in my 2011 line of thinking. There's no way that a sequel would come out in Japan today and we'd get the original game later.

People buying whatever is put out? The only thing I can think of is that somehow the PC version was really bad. Or that Japan just <em>really</em> wanted a version on the newest platform possible.

It might be a bit surprising, but this version of Lode Runner was one of Hudson's biggest selling games ever, in Japan. Supposedly it sold 1.10 million copies, more than Metroid did in Japan and pretty close to Legend of Zelda.

I guess there was a masochistic streak running throughout the Japanese gaming community at the time. How else can you explain the love for Spelunker and Tower of Druaga?

What's worse is that there were newer ports of Lode Runner by this time, like Super Lode Runner for the FDS (made by Irem).

It's great to be back too.

Also, it surprises me that these poorly made ports are coming out. They're old, they don't hold up on the system, and since they didn't have to build a game from scratch they had plenty of time to make it good.

It's not like people were climbing down Nintendo, Hudson, or Broderbund's necks to get a release of Lode Runner for the NES.

This game is symbolic of Broderbund's failed run as an NES publisher. Yes, the Japanese liked their games and made generally faithful ports, but those ports were utterly ancient by the time they came to America. This game came out in 1984 in Japan, and you're up to the US games of 1987. When Nintendo drudged up Dragon Warrior's outdated carcass in '89, they at least spruced up the appearance to make up for the truly basic gameplay.

I love having the manuals, reading the manuals, genuinely using them -- but!! -- I also firmly believe that a game should be intuitive. You __should__ be able to just pick it up and play it, on principle.

I absolutely DESPISE games where I do not get to pick which character I control -- yet last year I played a FIFA game on a friend's XBox 360 that still used the same functon!! Maybe it's just a soccer game thing, but it's irrational and ridiculous.

Excellent basic overview of the thorny issue of proper play time spent for reviewers before passing judgment. It would simply be silly to suggest that games of the RPG and puzzle genres would be most properly reviewed using the same amount of time. Just not necessary.

This is just my own personal take on educational games, but I refute the point that many tend to make when they say that children's/educational games need to be taken within context -- that they are aimed at a younger audience, that their purpose is education moreso than entertainment, etc. But, no; as a reviewer, in my mind, my basis for rating games is simple: Am I enjoying this? In the cases of most educational games, no, I am not, even if it's meant for kids. That does not effect my enjoyment, thus not improving the game's quality.

The graphics were provocative for the time, but I think the key to this review is tucked away right in the first line: "It’s a total waste of time." This is absolutely true. I cannot fathom the appeal of Slalom. It seems like the only point is to fire it up, look at the screen for a few moments, shrug, and turn it off, never to be played again because you have seen everything it has to offer.
